Air traffic control (ATC) in the UK is the responsibility of the NATS.

NATS runs two training schemes; one is to train air traffic control officers (ATCOs) and one for engineer and science graduates. NATS is seeking to recruit 220 student air traffic controllers and a number of graduate engineers/scientist in 2008.

Your development Instruction in all aspects of the theory and practice of ATC is given at the College of Air Traffic Control at Bournemouth Airport. This is followed by an extensive period of practical training at a designated operational unit. Suitably qualified systems and software engineer graduates may apply to join the NATS Graduate Training Scheme, which is accredited by the IEE and gives graduates an introduction to NATS’ systems and experience of working in one or two different departments of the company during two six-month placements before going to a software or systems engineering post. This two-year scheme normally leads to the graduate becoming a Chartered

Disciplines
For student air traffic controller, any discipline. For graduate engineer, you must have obtained or expect to obtain Masters level (MEng) accredited degree in electrical and electronic engineering, software engineering or equivalent degree, together with A-level maths and physics. Science graduates should have at least a 2.2 degree in a numerate subject. Human factors positions require a degree in HF/ergonomics or Occupational Psychology.

Locations
Mainly in South East but could be other UK locations.

Entry Level
To be considered for either scheme you must be eligible to work in the UK, and for the ATCO scheme be aged at least 18 at the date of application. You must also pass a medical examination.

Salary
Student ATC – initially paid training, eventual earnings rising up to £85k at the busiest units for experienced controllers. Graduate Engineers – starting salary £24,237, rising to £29,336 on first appointment (15 months). Science graduate/HF – starting salary £24,237.

How To Apply
Application details For both ATCOs and graduate engineers/scientist the company offers competitive salaries and very good conditions of employment.

Recruitment to the ATCO training scheme occurs all year round and requires attendance at an initial selection test centre, followed, if successful, by an assessment centre.

The graduate engineer/scientist recruitment intakes in November each year and all applications for this should be submitted by the end of the Summer. Candidates are required to attend a selection test day, comprising various exercises, presentations and interviews.
